[englisch, 'spæzmbænds], kleine, häufig spontan musizierende Ensembles (englisch spasm = »Anfall«) zur Zeit des archaischen Jazz, meist Jugendliche, die mit diversen Gegenständen europäische Instrumente nachahmten oder einfache afrikanische Instrumente nutzten; Vorläufer der Jazzbands, Vorbild der Skiffle-Gruppen; Instrumentarium: umgestülpte Bottiche (Tubs), Waschbrett, Töpfe und Koffer als Trommel- und Schlagzeugersatz, Jug (enghalsige Flasche, auch Krug, zum Hineinblasen als Bassstimmenersatz), Kazoo (Rohr mit Papiermembran als Trompetenersatz), mit Seidenpapier umwickelter Kamm, Stockbass, dazu Mundharmonika, Banjo u.a. Alfons M. Dauer unterscheidet von den Spasm-Bands die zur gleichen Zeit anzutreffenden Jug-, Tub- und Washboard-Bands, die zwar das gleiche Ersatzinstrumentarium verwendeten, jedoch damit afrikanische Musiziertraditionen weiterführten.
